So far this week, the 5th graders have ROCKED their review of multi-digit multiplication. So far, we have focused on multiplying up to a 4-digit number by a 1-digit number. Students are using the standard algorithm for multiplication, which relies on students to multiply each digit in the larger number by the other digit - just one more reason fact fluency is so important! This video does a good job of illustrating the algorithm. Students who are fluent with their multiplication facts are the most successful with this because they do not get "stuck" on finding the product for the fact. They are able to look at the problem as a whole. Thursday, students will begin multiplying two double digit numbers using the standard algorithm, as explained in this video. (YouTube is great!)
There are so many other resources for this topic, as well as online games to practice this skill. One thing that is important when working with larger numbers is that students take their time to avoid silly mistakes. Please encourage your child to take their time with their work. Thank you for your support!
As a reminder, every Thursday I am in my classroom at 7:00 for extra help.
I hope to see you at the concert on Friday!
