4th Grade Learning - Week of 10/13

This week the 4th graders are learning to multiply multi-digit numbers.  Yesterday, they learned how to multiply by multiples of 10 using "The Zeros Trick" to help them mentally compute.  Today, we explored the relationship between arrays (3rd grade learning) and area (4th grade expectation) as models for multiplication.

The Area Model of multiplication is a way for students to multiply multi-digit numbers using place value understanding, fact fluency, and knowledge of area in general.  This is different from the "old school" way we (myself included) learned how to multiply.  Students will be taught that way (the standard algorithm) later in this unit.  This YouTube video is one of many that illustrates this Area Model for multiplication.  Please support your child as they work with this model and try not to only work with them on the algorithm.  The Common Core pushes for students to understand math and the operations within a context, not just through computation and finding the answers.  Thank you for your support!

As a reminder, every Thursday I am in my classroom at 7:00 for extra help.

I hope to see you at the concert on Friday!
