4th Grade News - Week of 9/22

I am happy to report that the vast majority of the 4th grade class demonstrated mastery on their recent Place Value Unit Assessments.  I will be handing those back later this week - a couple students have to finish first.

We began our next unit - Addition and Subtraction with Whole Numbers (up to the millions).  The Common Core Standard for 4th grade surrounding this topic is that students should be able to use the standard algorithm to add and subtract whole numbers.  Additionally, students will solve addition and subtraction word problems, building from single step problems to multi-step/multi-operation problems.  The "standard algorithm" is the mathematical way to describe the most efficient way to compute.  This is the "old school" way to add and subtract.  This is building off of the strategies they learned in 3rd grade.  The challenge for most students is regrouping with subtraction problems, especially when there are zeros in the number (i.e. 10,000 - 45,203), which require students to regroup over zeros.

The Hartford Marathon Foundation's Final Mile Run (formerly the ING Run) permission slips are due Tuesday, September 23.  The event is on Tuesday, October 7.  It will be the first half of the day.  Students will eat lunch at the school when they return.  Students must wear their gym shorts/pants.  They will receive a t-shirt for the event.  This is one of my favorite events of the year.

Reminder: This Thursday starts the before-school extra help session - 7:00am.

Have a wonderful week!
