5th Grade News - Week of 9/22

We began our new unit - Adding and Subtracting Decimals.  Students took a preassessment today, and many students were able to extend what they learned last year (adding and subtracting whole numbers) to add and subtract decimals.    I am very impressed with their preassessments!  As part of this unit, students will complete a mini in-class project, The Shopping Project, where they apply their ability to compute with their problem solving skills.

The Hartford Marathon Foundation's Final Mile Run (formerly the ING Run) permission slips are due Tuesday, September 23.  The event is on Tuesday, October 7.  It will be the first half of the day.  Students will eat lunch at the school when they return.  Students must wear their gym shorts/pants.  They will receive a t-shirt for the event.  This is one of my favorite events of the year.

The Science Center permission slip is due Friday, September 26.  The trip is free!  We will be going on Thursday, October 9.  We will be walking from Capital Prep to the Science Center (less than a mile).  Please be sure to indicate if your child needs a lunch from the school.  

Reminder: This Thursday starts the before-school extra help session - 7:00am.
