Important Information for 5th Graders

Dear Fifth Grade Families,

As we enter the second half of the school year, the reality of middle school is getting much closer.  In an effort to prepare students for some of the changes in middle school, homework menus will no longer be assigned.  Instead, students will receive nightly homework (due the next day).  Based on conversations with middle school teachers and former 5th grade families, this has had a positive impact on homework completion in 6th grade.

Homework will be graded using the Study Skills Standard (SS.2) "completes assignments outside of class" and may or may not count as a standard grade for the Common Core Standards (skills or concepts).  Students who do not hand in their homework or hand in incomplete homework, will be required to complete it on their own time and hand it in by the posted due date to avoid a zero.

It is important to remember that homework is a tool for students to practice and apply their learning and for teachers to understand what students understood, retained, and need to continue to practice.

Additionally, all 5th graders will be taking the Science CMT in March (data TBD, but it is usually the first week of March).  This CMT covers all topics taught in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade.  We will review in class and through homework.  In addition to teacher assignments, this site is a GREAT review tool and has activities for each unit covered.

Specific information on homework, the Science CMT, and other upcoming events/projects will be sent home over the next couple of weeks.
