4th Grade News - Week of 10/27

Happy Monday!

This week, our 4th graders are continuing their unit on multiplying multi-digit whole numbers.  Today, they were introduced to the standard algorithm for multiplying a multi-digit number by a single digit (i.e. 435 time 3).  When I presented this algorithm to them, I referred to it as the "old school" way of multiplying (the way you and I were taught to multiply).  They ROCKED this skill today!  Tomorrow, they will work with the standard algorithm for multiplying double digit numbers.  Fourth graders are expected to multiply up to a 4-digit number by a 1-digit number and two double-digit numbers using any strategy - except for a calculator :)

Thursday, students will take an assessment on multiplication of whole numbers (Common Core NBT.5).  Students will be asked to use the area model and the algorithm to show mastery.  To review, students can use IXL (anything under the multiplication category) and their homework.

In science, we are starting our study of the water cycle and water's effects on the Earth (specifically, erosion).  This week's 4th grade vocabulary reflects this new unit.  Below are this week's words and definitions:

Water Vapor - the gas state of water (invisible)
Evaporation - liquid water is heated by the sun and turning into water vapor
Condensation - water vapor rises into the atmosphere, cools, and turns back into liquid water, forming clouds
Precipitation - clouds get too heavy (too full of water droplets) and liquid water falls to the Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail
Accumulation/Collection - water gathers in bodies of water (rivers, lakes, oceans), puddles, and soaks into the ground
