5th Grade News - Week of 8/25

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a great break and is ready to get back to work.

Last year, the 5th graders learned about our place value system by working with whole numbers.  This year, students will extend their knowledge of place value to work with decimals out to the thousandths place.  We will be working with decimal values almost exclusively for the next 3 months.  Students will work with the decimals to understand place value, then apply this knowledge to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals.  Many of the upcoming units directly relate to their learning in 4th grade.  I have already seen that they remember a lot of their learning from 4th grade, so I'm excited to dive deeper!

In science, students are beginning to study sound.  Through this unit, we experiment with how sounds are made, how sound travels, and how sounds can be changed by the surroundings.  We will also learn our ears work to collect sound and transfer the information to the brain.  I love teaching this topic and hope to do many experiments and activities to promote hands-on learning.  We will be starting our first hands-on activity tomorrow.

Students will continue to have gym and music for specials.  Fall Enrichments begin next week.  Students will find out this week what Enrichment they are assigned.  Monday, September 1 is Labor Day and there is no school.

Have a great week!
