This week, both grades are reviewing past standards. They have learned so much this year, so it is good to review. Also, it allows students to get another grade for those standards - boost that 2 to a 3 or that 3 to a 4. Students who demonstrate mastery will be given an extension project to work in class.
IXL is a great place for students to practice and review old standards. The skills we will be working on this week are listed below. Students can (and should) also choose from the previous grade or the next grade - the IXL skills are not all perfectly aligned to the Common Core Standards we teach.
4th:
-Addition of Whole Numbers
-Subtraction of Whole Numbers (especially with regrouping/borrowing)
-Multiplication of Whole Numbers (especially 2-digits times 2-digits)
-Division of Whole Numbers (dividing by 1-digit)
5th:
-Addition of Whole Numbers and Decimals
-Subtraction of Whole Numbers and Decimals (especially with regrouping)
-Multiplication of Whole Numbers and Decimals
-Division of Whole Numbers (especially dividing by 2-digits)
-Division of a Whole Number by a Decimal
With all these skills, students will be asked to demonstrate their knowledge of the operations through computation practice (skill) and word problems (application).
Homework is continuing to be assigned weekly for 4th grade and nightly for 5th grade. (NOTE: 5th grade did not have homework tonight because of the CMT tomorrow.) I cannot stress the importance of having students do homework - it allows them to practice and reinforce skills we are learning (or reviewing) in class.
As always, thank you for your support and for sharing your children with me :)
