Happy Happy Monday!
This week, both classes will study rounding. 4th Grade will focus on rounding whole numbers to any given place through the millions. 5th Grade will review the 4th grade skill, then focus on rounding decimals to a given place out to the thousandths.
Students have learned various songs, poems, raps, and tricks to help them remember the rounding rules. Rounding is a skill that take A LOT of repetition and practice. Khan Academy has some good tutorials for this skill (and many others). The links below are appropriate for both grades. Students can also review the previous year's videos on Khan Academy, if needed. This is not required, but time spent using Khan Academy and practicing the problems they give can be documented on the Homework Menu and count towards the week's minutes.
Both of these skills are outlined in the Common Core of State Standards - this is the outline for all the skills and concepts we teach through our math units. If you're curious about the Common Core, check out their website to see what your child will be expected to learn over the course of the year.
In science, 4th grade will build on their knowledge about ecosystems to explore how biotic (living) and abiotic (nonliving) factors (things) interact within a specific ecosystem. We will start representing this through food chains. 5th grade will continue to study sound, focusing on how sound travels in waves and how the features of the sound wave represent the sound being made.
