Update: Week of July 27

We have a very busy two weeks coming up!

Over the next two weeks in math, we will focus on solving word problem while reviewing all four operations.  Students are going to be expected to follow a set of steps when solving word problems.  Please reinforce them at home for homework assignments.  The steps are below (they should be familiar for returning students):

  • Read the entire problem.
  • Underline the question(s).
  • TTQA all questions - Turn The Question Around - make it into a statement
  • Determine the correction operation(s) – look for the verbs!
    • Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide
  • Determine which pieces of information you need.  Cross out anything that is extra.
  • Solve the problem.
    • Complete all steps of the problem.
    • Make sure you’re answering all the questions.
    • Interpret any remainders – use the context!
  • Write the number answer in your TTQA.
  • Check your TTQA for capital letters and punctuation.
In science, we will continue to learn about our senses and how signals are sent to the brain through the nervous system.

Be on the lookout for a permission slip being sent home this week.  On September 3, the 5th grade will be traveling to North Haven to tour the Energize CT Center and participate in some science activities.  The trip is free thanks to Energize CT!  More details will be in the permission slip.

Also, next Thursday, August 6, the CT Science Center will be visiting Capital Prep to conduct some experiments with each class.  The topic of the investigations is sound, which is our first unit in Quint 2.  This is an awesome hand-on program - I will post pictures following the visit.

As a reminder, our first concert is this Friday, July 31 at 6:00 in the back courtyard.  Students in music should be at the school around 5:30 and report to myself or Ms. Robinson.  I hope to see you there!
